Fray Day 8 Central Florida: Rescheduling Due to Hurricane Frances. Hurricane Frances left a lot of destruction in her wake here in Volusia County, and severe damage to the area's infrastructure left most of us without power and every life-sustaining thing that goes along with that (a/c, refrigeration, Internet access, et cetera) for more than a week. Stetson University, our host, just reopened last week after a two-week break because of Frances' effects. Thus, we have to push back Fray Day Central Florida a few weeks. An updated date, and possibly location, will be posted as soon as possible. Thanks for your understanding.
Fray Day 8 Copenhagen: Fray Day in Copenhagen Fray is back in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the third year in a row! Just like the two previous years, the venue is the same, namely Märkbar. Fray Day 8 San Francisco: 2nd Musical Guest: Kid Beyond I'm thrilled to announce Kid Beyond will be performing at Fray Day 8 SF! Kid Beyond, aka Andrew Chaikin, is a mindbending beatboxer / vocalist – voted San Francisco's Best Beatboxer in SF Weekly's Best of SF 2004. Looping and multitracking his voice live onstage, he combines singing, throat singing, beatboxing, vocal turntablism and other "voicestrumentation" to create an infectious mix of funk, trip-hop, house, drum'n'bass, and breakbeat. Kid Be has shared the stage with James Brown, LL Cool J, Spearhead, Run-DMC, and even President Bill Clinton. He has brought the house down at Carnegie Hall, at Bangkok's hottest club Song Slueng, and on FOX-TV's "30 Seconds to Fame." He teaches beatboxing and other vocal workshops around the country; performs regularly with local acts such as Felonious, Gavin Hardkiss, DJ SoulSalaam, DJ Zeph, DJ Motion Potion, and Shotgun Wedding; and hosts The Vowel Movement, SF's monthly beatbox showcase.
Fray Day 8 Grand Rapids: Featured Storyteller: Paul Moore Paul Moore is a freelance filmmaker and writer who lives and works in Grand Rapids. He has been married to Kristen and they are expecting their first child in the spring. This is Paul's second year at Fray Day Grand Rapids.
Fray Day 8 Grand Rapids: Featured Storyteller: George Mossel I just got an e-mail indicating that the Rev. George Mossel will be performing at Fray Day Grand Rapids. George Mossel started teaching at Hillside Community Church (then Cuttlerville Hills, CRC) in 1986 after serving at a mission church near Hesperia Michigan for six years. He was my pastor growing up. George always offered a special treat for his parishioners at the Thanksgiving Day service every year. He would spin a tale based on his experiences growing up in South Holland, IL. The story would take the place of the usual sermon. George is bringing his special storytelling ability to Fray Day Grand Rapids for the first time this year!
Fray Day 8 Grand Rapids: Featured Storyteller: Yvonne Healy This morning I got a confirmation that Yvonne Heally, 2004 storyteller of the year, will be joing us for Fray Day Grand Rapids. Using simply voice, gesture and story, Yvonne invites you into the theater of your own imagination. Raised in the Irish oral tradition she grew up to act on New York’s stage and screen. Multicultural mythology, a love of language, and her outrageous family lured her back to storytelling. Continue reading "Featured Storyteller: Yvonne Healy" »
Fray Day 8 San Francisco: 1st Musical Guest: Goh Nakamura It's my extreme pleasure to welcome our first musical guest to the bill: Goh Nakamura. Goh sounds like a less depressed Elliot Smith and sings about San Francisco, Natalie Portman, and memories of childhood. Friend of Fray Min Jung Kim describes him like this: "Listening to Goh Nakamura is like falling in love for the first time. It's bemusing, sweet, and a little clumsy in moments, but pricelessly charming in spite of itself. You hope it never ends. Nakamura, a Bay Area native, successfully marries earnest and bemusing lyrics with catchy refrains and solid guitar melodies, without delving into cloying sentimentality or heavy theatrics." As a special preview, Goh has made an MP3 of one of his songs available to Frayers. Listen in! DOWNLOAD 4.8MB: Pigeon Toes If you like it you can buy his album at CD Baby. And don't miss his set at Fray Day 8 San Francisco!
