Photos from Sedona!

Fray Cafe Sedona was a really special evening. Two and a half hours of some excellent, intimate storytelling. And now we have photographic evedence! Check out some of the photos from that incredible night.

Derek Powazek started the evening off with a live rendition of I Like to Travel. (Thanks to Mark Bernstein for the photo!) Brenda Laurel told the tale of her journey with Linda Rose from Columbus, Ohio, to a bar in a run-down Tacoma hotel. Eric Elnes told a story called How My Dad Saved the Socialist. Tony Corito told a story called Golfing the Dream Awake. Karyl Goldsmith told a story about an Italian motorcycle. Jim Inbody came with a story about a frog. But when he heard the other performers, he decided to tell a more personal story. He called it, The Smartest Man I Ever Met, and I Didn't Know It. It was about his dad, who worked on the bombs that ultimately landed on Hiroshima. Mike Bonifer, who's currently working on a documentary called Finding Bully Murray, told a story about a Japanese tea ceremony gone terribly wrong. Kate Peters told a story called My Mom's Advice. Chris Rayko told a story about a near-death experience in a cave. Michelle McGeoy told a story about making change, inside and out. CJ Beaman told a story called Prince Pandar's Chagall. A surprise musical finale by Teri Scheinzeit.

We rocked!
Posted by Derek on Saturday 14 June 03 @ 12:44AM

Fray Cafe Sedona was awesome! We had 80 people in the Cayon Moon for two and a half hours. The evening featured 20 wonderful stories on growing up, golfing champions, Britney Spears, moms and dads, husbands and wives, a tea ceremony gone wrong, and a song about the laundry room. Brilliant.

We took tons of photos, video, and audio, so stay tuned to this url for updates. We'll get it online as soon as possible.

I also want to thank Denise Atchley from the Digital Storytelling Festival, Mary from the Canyon Moon Theatre, and our local volunteers, Thomas Vincent and Michael Pence, for flyering the town. And special thanks to everyone who came and shared a story. You made tonight something special.

Brenda Laurel joins the fray
Posted by Derek on Wednesday 4 June 03 @ 8:33AM

brendaI'm thrilled to welcome Brenda Laurel as a featured storyteller for Fray Cafe Sedona! Brenda is a Ph.D. theatre type who stumbled into computer games in 1976. Her many forays include producing action games, designing VR worlds, creating a company to make computer games for girls, and writing books. Despite obvious talent, she remains economically challenged.

Here's a sneak peek of the story she'll be telling at Fray Cafe Sedona: "Excuse me, there's something in my drink." When she swooshed into Jack's Ladies' Bar all blonde and curly and the only woman in a skirt, I knew we were destined to spend some interesting time together. My journey with Linda Rose from Columbus, Ohio, to a bar in a run-down Tacoma hotel was, as all journeys are, punctuated by some revelations about identity.
