People in Washington DC walk up and down escalators.
This surprised me when I moved here in 1989. I was a
rather wide-eyed small town kid, just graduated from a
cozy Pennsylvania college, and much of the city both
amused and scared me. But there was something different
about the escalator people, something robotic and a
little scary. It wasn't just all the suited, briefcased
grown-ups pumping up and down, rejecting the quaint
promise of a free ride, but more the finality with
which it was done. Walkers on the left, standers on the
right. No exceptions and ignorance is no excuse. Make
your choice and stick with it.
