Give the gift of Fray
Posted by Derek at 12:52PM

Looking for unusual gifts to give for the holidays? The Frayers are here to help.

Fray author Lance Arthur has just self published his first book of short stories: Fucking Brilliant. The book features material first published here in Fray, and is sure to be the talk of any Secret Santa gift exchange.

And Heather Champ, a Fray author as well as a talented photographer, is now taking subscriptions for her 2004 Photo Club. Sign up a loved one for a beautiful photo in the mail once a month for all of 2004, plus an extra one on their birthday!

And, of course, there's always Fray's humble store, if you're looking for a t-shirt or CD or some other swag and would like to support true stories on the web.

Either way, just remember the true spirit of the holidays: Gifts. Lots and lots of gifts.

New in {fray}: Pet Stories
Posted by Derek at 1:47AM

We've got one heckuva new story up now! Check out Pet Stories, a special group story featuring contributions by Fray regulars like Lance Arthur, Ben Brown, Heather Champ, Jessica Donohoe, Maggie Powers, and yours truly, plus newcomers Heather Armstrong (of the fabulous Dooce) and Susan McNeece, who first performed the story of the horny rabbit at Fray Day 7 San Francisco.

And rounding it all out is a fantastic set of illustrations by the mysterious Goopymart. If you like his work, you should definitely visit his site and say hello from us.

These group stories always take a lot of work, but this one was a doozy. So I'd like to especially thank Heather Champ for doing all the organizing, Maggie Powers for all the editing, and of course Goopymart for the fantastic illustrations.

I hope you enjoy the pet stories and take a moment to share your own!

Fast Food Stories
Posted by Derek at 8:16AM

If you checked out Skot Kurruk's tale of fast food craziness, Chicken Tenderfoot, when it first went up, be sure to check out the posted stories again - they're great. The most recent page includes stories from behind the counter of KFC, McDonalds, Hardee's, and the dreaded Tapioca Express.

Also: We're having our first Fray event in the UK this sunday! If you're nearby, don't miss Fray Cafe Cardiff.

999 To Go
Posted by Derek at 7:43AM

We've mentioned the beloved 1000 Journals Project before, but here's the gist: 1000 blank journals, traveling from person to person, each person adding something to a few pages and passing it on, with the ultimate goal of the journal returning home. Well, after three years, the first journal has returned home. Please give a warm welcome to Journal 0526, which traveled to Ireland and back and returned with stories to tell.

Bar Mitzvah Disco
Posted by Derek at 3:04PM

The folks at Bar Mitzvah Disco are working on a book of bar mitzvah memories, photos, and stories. They say: "We are writing a book that seeks to capture every detail of the bar mitzvah experience: the parties, the themes, the clothes, the meaning and, often times, the lack of meaning." Check out the images they've collected so far, and see how you can help.

What did you used to believe?
Posted by Derek at 6:05PM

"I Used To Believe is a collection of ideas that adults thought were true when they were children. It will remind you what it was like to be a child, fascinated and horrified by the world in equal parts. The following pages will reassure you that the things you used to believe weren't so strange after all."

A Veteran's Story
Posted by Derek at 7:53AM

To commemorate Veteran's Day today, head over to A Veteran's Story, which is "committed to telling the history of our men and women in uniform by preserving their own stories and photos." Today's featured story is by Clark Simmons, who was on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. He says: "We just went over the side into the water and (swam) for Ford Island, where the rest of our crew who had gotten off...."

Stories from Appalachia
Posted by Derek at 8:29AM

I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents from New York. I was only there until I was 6, so I don't have many memories of the place. One thing I do remember was our neighbor, Buck, who had a southern accent so think, we'd get stuck in these conversational loops, where he'd say something, and I'd say "What?" and he'd say sonething, and I'd say....

I couldn't help thinking of Buck after meeting Jerry Harmon, who calls himeself an "authentic Appalachian mountain storyteller," and listening to his stories (especially this one).

New in {fray}: Chicken Tenderfoot
Posted by Derek at 11:11PM

If you've ever had the pleasure of being that kid behind the counter, punching the clock and passing the time, in a place that always smells of bleach or grease, where the bathroom mirror yells at you in all caps to wash your hands in three languages, all for minimum wage ... then you might be able to relate to this new Fray story. Please welcome Fray's newest author, Skot Kurruk, and his tale of fast food hell: Chicken Tenderfoot. And for more from Skot, visit his site, Izzle Pfaff.
