I never really understood alcohol when I was a kid. I used to ask my parents for sips of their wine at parties. "You won't like it," they'd tell me as I drank. And as I ran to the sink to spit it out, I agreed with them.

I didn't really get it all through high school, either. I was the one in the group who never drank, never understood why my friends did. It tasted like shit, it numbed your senses, it poisoned your body.

Watching Grandpa go through rehab drove all this home.
